Gennady Golovkin’s promotional team have sent the Nevada State Athletic Commission a letter below which after reading it, suggests that a showdown with Canelo Alvarez on May 5th now does not look likely at all.
That said, they are still trying to get a potential fight in its place to happen on the date in question in Las Vegas.
If it’s not going to be Canelo fans are going to be disappointed either way – but the show must go on as they say.
Canelo goes before the Commission later this month to determine his fate following a failed drugs test ahead of the proposed Golovkin rematch, but team GGG are taking steps to ensure either way they are able to get a fight on that date:
More than anything it appears to be a precaution from team GGG in the eventuality that Canelo does indeed receive a suspension from the Commission and is unable to make the May 5th date.
The venue for the fight the T-Mobile Arena have been granting refunds in recent days but many fans are sticking to their guns and waiting out what is a very strange situation to happen so close to such a big fight.
Opponents that have been mentioned as potential replacements for Canelo include – Demetrius Andrade and Gary ‘Spike’ O’Sullivan.
