Wilder Responds To Ortiz Claim That Ref Saved Him

Cuban heavyweight Luis Ortiz and his team are looking to secure a rematch with the WBC heavyweight champion after their 10th round TKO loss earlier this month.

Wilder secured a significant win in Brooklyn earlier this month but was made to come through arguably the biggest scare of his professional boxing career to come back and get the win.

Since the fight Ortiz and his team believed that in round 8 of the bout the referee did Wilder a favour by not stopping the fight as they claim he was badly hurt and should have been pulled out at that point.

However, Wilder was not stopped and furthermore, went on to recover and win the fight in the 10th round.

Speaking to the Below The Belt podcast (via Boxing Scene), Wilder said of Ortiz’ team’s claim:

“They need excuses. Every time a person loses, you notice how they need some type of excuse. We get this in every fight. What is a few seconds? If you add up all of the time it was only five seconds at best. So what is that going to do for me to recover? That’s not going to do nothing for a person.”

Wilder travels to Wales later this month to watch the Anthony Joshua vs Joseph Parker unification of which he has a chance of facing the winner later this year
