Gervonta Davis stripped of world title on the eve of the Floyd Mayweather vs Conor McGregor event in Las Vegas.
The IBF junior lightweight title is now vacant as Davis (18-0 17KO) came in at 132 pounds, two pounds over the limit in what was to be his upcoming defense against Francisco Fonseca (19-0-1 13KO) on the undercard of the Floyd Mayweather vs Conor McGregor super fight tonight at the T-Mobile Arena in Paradise, Nevada.
Davis had also missed weight slightly against his first defense against Englishmen Liam Walsh (21-1 14KO), who Davis defeated via third-round technical knockout in Copper Box Arena, London, England.
Davis had earned the belt by defeating Jose Pedraza (22-1 12KO), from Puerto Rico, by seventh round TKO in Barclay’s Center, Brooklyn.
Rules allow a second weigh-in and Davis had then achieved weight on the next attempt.
Davis was the youngest American champion in boxing at the time at 22 years old and the Fonseca, from Costa Rica, can still earn the title by defeating Davis in the still planned 12 round bout.
Fonseca and Davis had weighed in behind closed doors and Fonseca came in at exactly 130 pounds. Davis gave the following reaction on his Twitter account following missing weight:
