WBO middleweight champion Billy Joe Saunders next fight has been pencilled in for October 22nd and will take place in Cardiff, Wales.
The news has been confirmed officially today that Saunders will headline the show at the Motorpoint Arena in Cardiff which will be shown live on TV channel BoxNation.
Saunders (23-0-12KO) last competed in the ring back in December of 2015 when he initially won the title over previous belt holder Irishman Andy Lee by defeating him via a majority decision in Manchester.
Since then, Saunders has been both plagued by injury and indeed protracted fight negotiations, but now the Englishman finally has a date this year to work towards.
The champion has been back in heavy training recently and appears fully focused on the job at hand after today’s announcement:
.@bjsaunders_: “Every fight is dangerous at this stage so it is important that I don’t overlook or underestimate anybody”
— Frank Warren (@frankwarren_tv) September 26, 2016
An opponent has yet to be named for the upcoming date but it is expected that more news on this should come next week at some point.
The bill was previously expected to be headlined by middleweight Chris Eubank Jr, however he pulled out of the show citing injury recently.
His opponent who he was meant to face for the British middleweight title Tommy Langford (Commonwealth champion and WBO no.2) is also still on the card and an announcement for his replacement for Eubank Jr is also expected very soon.
This fight represents a massive opportunity for Saunders to set up a potentially significant showdown straight after it in December or even possibly in the new year, with the champion recently saying he would be more than interested in a fight with the division’s current top dog Gennady ‘GGG’ Golovkin.
Talks of a rematch with Chris Eubank Jr have also frequented the boxing media landscape in recent times, with that also been a potential match up again in 2017.
