Amir Khan to return to welterweight division following destructive knockout loss to Canelo Alvarez last May in Las Vegas.
Amir Khan’s last appearance in the ring ended up being a highlight reel knockout victory for Mexican boxing star Canelo Alvarez, but no one can fault Khan’s bravery and courage for stepping up an entire two weight categories to face such a significantly larger adversary.
Khan, whatever you might think of him, has always been involved in exciting fights and still has plenty of left to give to the sport one would think competing back near his more natural weight class.
Speaking on what’s next this weekend during a cricket game on Pakistan television, Khan said:
“I’m going to go back down to my original weight, which is welterweight. I moved up two weight categories but obviously the person, my opponent out powered me. I’m going to go back down to 147lbs, I think that’s more natural to me. I’ve some good big fights ahead of me, for example Danny Garcia for the title and then you’ve got Lamont Peterson maybe there as well.”
He also spoke on an old injury that’s been holding him back for years and how now we will see a much more powerful version of him next up:
“I had some problems for the last ten years in my hand. I was only punching with 30% power. Just now recently I got this fixed. The doctor couldn’t believe I kept fighting with this same problem. I’ve got it fixed now so I cannot wait to get back into the ring to feel this of this power again. Obviously it’s going to feel a little different at the start, but I’m sure I’ll get used to it.”
It is not known yet when Khan’s return will be exactly, but bearing in mind the devastating nature of the knockout defeat to Canelo (full fight available here), the jumping up in multiple weight classes and the recovery from his recent hand surgery – a return is unlikely until 2017 one would imagine.
