David Haye Heavyweight Title Shot In Play For 2017

A David Haye heavyweight title shot in 2017 could be on the cards it has emerged.

The Londoner and former WBA heavyweight champion of the world could be closing in on a shot at his hold title in the near future.

Haye (28-2-26KO) has fought twice this year since returning to the sport following a three and half year hiatus due to extensive injuries that required reconstruction and at one point, were speculated to even be the end of his career.

Alas, Haye came back this year and has recorded two stoppage wins over (to be fair) limited opposition against Mark de Mori and Arnold Gjergjaj, both at London’s O2 Arena – which has become a bit of a stomping ground for him now.

But calls are now coming for Haye to step up a level in competition and take on someone who can test his world class boxing ability.

Newly crowned WBC cruiserweight champion Tony Bellew voiced his interest in a Haye fight this past summer

According to Richard Damerell of Sky Sports, WBA president Gilberto Mendoza has said that Haye could potentially be in line for a shot at their title following the outcome of an ongoing situation surrounding current (regular) WBA champion Lucas Browne.

As always, nothing is ever straightforward in boxing but nonetheless, Haye’s rise back up the rankings in the sport certainly adds more buzz to the already exciting heavyweight division.

Haye was linked with a fight against Shannon Briggs next up in 2016, but it doesn’t look terribly likely that will happen now.

If you consider Haye could be back in the mix at the top of the heavyweight pile as early as next year, he will also then be floating around potential fights with new heavyweight stars in the sport such as Tyson Fury, Anthony Joshua and Deontay Wilder.

Four exciting heavyweights both in and outside the ring, with contrasting personalities, could spell the dawn of an exciting new era of heavyweight boxing – that has been badly missed in the sport in recent years.

Imagine a four way box-off heavyweight tournament between the above four fighters down the line?
