33 year old Nicola Adams from Leeds became a double Olympic gold medallist today in Brazil.
The reigning Olympic champion from London 2012 and reigning world champion from Kazakhstan earlier this year – boxed very well today in Rio to win Gold.
Competing in the flyweight (51kg) division, Adams took on France’s Sarah Ourahmoune.
The first round got off to a close start for both fighters, Adams showing a decent left hand at times and saw her won the round unanimously by the judges.
Adams started boxing on the back foot in the beginning of the second round but switched things up nicely onto some front foot aggression, landing accurate one-two combinations at range and really seemed to be finding her timing and rhythm by the end of the round.
The judges scored round two in favour of Adams again.
Ourahmoune knowing that she needed to step on the gas, picked things up in the third round – upping the work rate and trying to force the pace.
The judges reflected this effort accordingly, awarding the round unanimously to Ourahmoune.
The fourth and final round proved to be a more scrappy affair, as both boxers mixed it up and traded more in a bid to win the Gold medal.
A very competitive fight, no doubt.
The winner was read out on the judges scorecards as Great Britain’s Nicla Adams who became a two-time Olympic champion, defending her title from 2012 and joined a very exclusive club in Olympic boxing history.
