Pound for pound boxing great Floyd Mayweather could have his eye on signing US Olympian Shakur Stevenson after this Olympics if he turns pro.
19 year old Stevenson progressed to the semi-final of the 2016 Olympics today with a convincing 3-0 win over his Mongolian opponent.
Despite his young age, Shakur is being tipped by many to win Gold for America given his precocious natural ability but going by the standard of judging in this year’s games, no matter how good you are – nothing is guaranteed.
Indeed even Floyd Mayweather himself knows this only too well having tasted Olympic robbery back in 1996, when he lost his semifinal bout to Bulgarian Serafim Todorov via a highly controversial judging decision in Atlanta.
Fast forward twenty years and Floyd Mayweather has done okay for himself since, well more than okay.
He has become the best pound for pound boxer of his generation, the highest paid professional athlete of his time and currently sits on a perfect record of 49-0 (26KO) in the professional boxing ring.
It now appears that he wants to bring through the next generation of American boxing talent as a promoter and is keen to pass on what he knows about the fight business to the next era of top boxing talent.
Speaking after Shakur’s latest win today in an interview with NJ.com and other members of the media gathered ringside, it was clear to see as much from the way he was talking:
