Dillian Whyte outpointed David Allen over 10 rounds to capture the WBC international heavyweight title.
After a fair bit of trash talk in the lead up to this heavyweight bout, both men gave the fans a rough and tough heavyweight scrap tonight in Leeds.
Dillian Whyte shocked a few people by coming out in a southpaw stance in the first round against Allen, but quickly returned to his normal orthodox stance in the second.
Whyte controlled the early action with the jab in the first couple of rounds. Both men were trying to figure each other out early on, with Allen seeming to be employing a ‘walk down’ type game plan on Whyte.
The third round saw a lot of Whyte’s punches landing on Allen’s gloves and the best punch of the round came from Allen towards the end of it, who landed a nice looping right hand before the bell went.
After a scrappy fourth round, Allen shipped a painful looking uppercut from Whyte in the 5th – proving his renowned chin and reputation for toughness was certainly warranted.
As the mid rounds unfolded it was evident that Whyte was looking to box Allen and the ‘Body Snatcher’ showed considerable improvement in this regard from his last couple of fights, putting his punches together nicely at times.
Whyte’s use of the uppercut in the mid rounds was a key weapon for him against Allen, landing some sickening punches that the ultra brave Allen absorbed on numerous occasions.
As the bout came down the stretch in the late rounds Whyte’s experience looked to be comfortably winning the fight for him. Although Allen was coming forward a lot, Whyte was throwing and landing a lot more.
But there was no denying Allen’s heart mind you, who kept coming and in the 10th round started to throw a little bit more leather – prompting some taunting from Whyte towards Allen as he ran out victorious on points.
Whyte appeared not to want to touch gloves with Allen at the end of the 10th bell, but then both men embraced after about a minute went passed.
The final scorecards ran out as unanimous winner for Dillian Whyte as the following:
100-90, 100-91 and 99-91.
The win improved Whyte’s record to 18-1-14KO and notably will give him a top 15 ranking in the WBC following the win of their international title tonight.
