Matthew Macklin Decisions Brian Rose

A pair of experienced warriors clashed in a decent scrap in London’s O2 arena.

Both men started positively in round 1, with perhaps the best punch landing a sharp right hand from Rose.

Macklin went to the body well in the early rounds but Rose’s occasional counters developed a mark under the right eye of Macklin, in a scrappy start to the contest overall.

As the fight progressed, Macklin started to dig in some hurtful looking body shots and was perhaps a bit more industrious with his work rate compared to Rose, who was however using his jab in good spots against Macklin.

Macklin landed some eye catching body shots and clusters of head and body work towards the end of round 5. As the mid rounds unfolded, a very close fight was developing – certainly a difficult fight to score as a judge.

A decent fight was progressing where both men were really digging in deep, with Rose using his length well at times but perhaps the more notable punches were coming from Macklin.

Rose started to take the center of the ring a bit more in rounds 8 and 9 and seemed to gain a second wind, with more of a spring in his step as the championship rounds began.

Macklin however continued to press on, in a still very hard fight to score, but was deducted a point at the very end of the 10th round just before the bell sounded, for a low blow after been warned earlier in the round for a low shot.

Macklin upped the pace in round 11 and put Rose onto the back foot for most of the three minutes.

The final round saw even more urgency from Matthew Macklin, as he came out swinging. Brian Rose had a point deducted for holding and both men traded leather towards the end of the final bell.

Perhaps not the classic that some predicted it would be before hand, but it was clear both men gave their absolute all in the ring – with both fighters embracing in respect at the end of the bout.

The final scorecards read out: 113-113, 115-111 and 115-111 to Matthew Macklin to win a majority decision.
