Irish Australian Boxing Eyes Will Be Smiling On Sydney March 12th
March 12th sees Paul Nasari’s ‘Neutral Corner Fight Promotions’ present the biggest Fight Card in Sydney for well over a year – hosted at Sydney’s iconic Olympic Park.
As well as showcasing some of Australia’s top emerging talent such as Jack Brubaker and Brandon Ogilvie, the March 12th show will also see three Irish fighters take to the ring in Darragh Foley, Gearoid Clancy and Paddy Murphy – all three are facing Australian opponents and looking to make their mark on the Australian scene and with the live show streaming live via epicentre.tv and then replayed on Fox Sports on St Patrick’s Day the following weekend they are unlikely to be given a better chance.
First out will be Gearoid Clancy (5-2-0), involved in a much-anticipated rematch with popular Sydney-Sider Brendan Saunders (3-3-2).
The last fight between this pair was an electrifying all-action affair that saw Clancy take home the NSW Title, this fight on the 12th of March will see the winner take home the vacant IBO Oceania Lightweight Title and the chance to gain an International Ranking. Both fighters brought great support to their last meeting in Punchbowl so expect to see more of the same in front of the larger crowd at Olympic Park.
Speaking at the Media Day in North Sydney, Clancy stated:
“Brendan gave me a good tough fight last time round, but it’s not going to be so tough this time, I want to make easier work of it…. I know if I bring my A-game he won’t be able to handle it” – Clancy is certainly fired up for this one and anyone who saw Clancy v Saunders the first time will know this has potential to be fight of the night!”
The next Irish fighter to step between the ropes will be ‘Irish’ Paddy Murphy (11-1-2), returning to the ring for the first time since suffering the only defeat of his career against Rivan Cesaire (13-5-1) in November 2014.
He faces off against popular Aussie, Jack ‘The Ripper’ Brubaker (9-1-1) for the vacant OPBF Welterweight Title in the second of the three Ireland v Australia match-ups on the card. Under the guidance of new coach Rodney Williams, Murphy is looking to shake off any ring-rust:
“Pick up a good win on March 12th… defend the title a few times and then go from there.”
On paper this is one of the tightest fights to call with both fighters boasting very similar records. Brubaker himself is most definitely coming for the win, stating in our interview yesterday:
“National Pride is at stake…there’s no way I’m losing to an Irish guy on home soil.”
The winner of Brubaker v Murphy will be recognised as one of the best Australian Welterweights at the moment alongside the likes of Sam Ah See and Cameron Hammond – Brubaker himself acknowledged the need to fight the best in Australia before looking overseas, something a number of Aussie fighters have failed to do in recent years.
Headlining the show is the final of the three ‘Australia v Ireland’ fights on the night with ‘Super’ Darragh Foley (8-1-0) taking on ‘Brilliant’ Brandon Ogilvie (14-1-0) for the WBA Oceania Lightweight Title, both of these fighters bring with them an excellent support and will be looking to challenge the likes of George Kambosos Jr and Josh King at the top of the Australian Lightweight Rankings should they emerge victorious on March 12th.
Sydney-based Foley commented on the amazing support he and the Irish fighters receive and says it gives him something extra to draw upon if the going gets tough and, now he is Boxing full-time, the confidence is high in the Foley camp that Brandon Ogilvie will be another step in his path to glory. This is a hotly anticipated match-up between two very exciting fighters with a lot to gain.
As mentioned above, the Fight Card being put on by Paul Nasari’s promotional team is an exciting one, featuring a list of very competitive ‘50/50’ fights – something Australian Boxing has lacked in the last couple of years and this March 12th show will hopefully be a springboard for more of these marquee shows at credible venues. The whole night can be streamed live at www.epicentre.tv and will be replayed on Fox Sports a week later. Tickets are also still available.
