Light-heavyweight prospect, ‘Sniper’ Sam Smith (1-0) has confirmed the date for his next professional contest as March 12th at the Oasis Leisure Centre in Swindon on a KM Promotions event titled, ‘March Madness’.
With opponent yet to be confirmed, the 22-year-old talent from Guildford is eagerly looking ahead to the opportunity to double his win tally on the 10th weekend of the year, he enthused:
“I’m really looking forward to this next one, definitely more confident now. I started sparring this Saturday with David ‘Bomber’ Bailey, he’s an unbeaten light-heavyweight from Chris Sanigar’s gym in Bristol and was my first spar back.”
Smith, trained by Paddy Fitzpatrick in his Swindon-based gym, won his professional debut on December 20th at the Grange Leisure Centre, defeating opponent Mark Till on points.
The 28-year-old travelling opponent from Stoke-on-Trent made Smith work hard for the win and has been known to upset the odds previously against other debutants during his two year-long professional boxing career.
Smith commented on his opponent:
“It was a hard fight to be honest, he came to win and he was tough.”
The four-round contest at 175lbs was scored at 39-37 by referee Jeff Hinds to the 22-year-old from Surrey known as ‘Sniper’. Smith took his time warming up in and admits to feeling the nerves in the initial stages of the bout, he explained:
“I was going into the unknown with my first pro fight but I’m looking forward to the next one; definitely feeling the confidence more.”
Since winning his pro bow, he has been back in training readying himself for his next scheduled bout, working on imperfections with trainer Fitzpatrick, who used to work closely with Freddie Roach in his Wildcard Gym in L.A. The 22-year-old said:
“I’ve been working on my stance a lot. I was losing shape working on the inside. I was getting away with it in sparring because I was moving away all the time. In my last fight it was my right knee that kept buckling and making me lose my shape.”
The former three-time national amateur champion from Dunsfold spent an entire year in the gym preparing for his inauguration into the paid ranks due to licensing issues and cancelled shows.
A recently signed contract will ensure the 175-pounder is kept busy during 2016, he confirmed:
“The contract is for six fights this year, not sure of all the dates yet. Being a busy fighter is better for me, in the amateurs I used to go months without fighting and I’d go stale. I’d like to get to seven wins in then look at Southern Area titles.”
