2016 Could Finally Be The Year Andy Lee v Matthew Macklin Happens

The pair’s names have long been linked with one another over the years, but 2016 the stars might finally be aligned for the two to step in the ring with each other once and for all, and Irish boxing fans could finally see Andy Lee v Matthew Macklin.

Matthew Macklin (currently promoted by Matchroom Sport) is due to next fight on April 9th against an opponent to be named, but according to his promoter Eddie Hearn this week, an Andy Lee v Matthew Macklin fight afterwards could be on the cards:

The fight could finally make sense to happen this year with the two fighters at the right time in their respective careers for it to take place.

Matthew Macklin has enjoyed a mini-resurgence in form as of late, rattling off three straight victories since his last defeat to Jorge Sebastian Heiland in Dublin, back in November 2014 at the 3 Arena.

Former world champion Lee on the other hand is coming off the back of a close defeat to Billy Joe Saunders last December just gone, when he was outpointed by the Englishman for the WBO middleweight title.

If Macklin were to win in April, the fight with Lee could logically be made perhaps later in the year, as per Eddie Hearn above.
