The heavyweight title dream looks like it has now ended for the Cork based Cuban.

It took all of 91 seconds for Russian heavyweight contender Alexander Povetkin to secure his mandatory contender shot at WBC heavyweight champion Deontay Wilder.

He dropped Mike ‘The Rebel’ Perez twice in the very first round in a one sided beat down, that will likely have disappointed many Irish and Cuban boxing fans.

Perez has had an up and down career in the pro ranks it must be said, with many things not going his way at times. For my money, I don’t think Mike was ever the same since a fight a few years ago that saw him badly injure a former opponent, I don’t think he was ever the same mentally.

After tonight’s defeat, some soul searching will need to be done no doubt, before he makes any decisions on his boxing career.

Povetkin moves on brightly however, setting up a cracking fight with Deontay Wilder. A real fifty fifty heavyweight tussle, that will likely excite many fight fans and will also have the whole American vs Russia story line going for it, which will no doubt be a big sell.
