SPIKE O SULLIVAN MAKES IT A NIGHT TO REMEMBER AT THE GARDEN

By Niall Doran

It was certainly a night to remember for Gary Spike O Sullivan at the famous Madison Square Garden arena, which saw the Cork middleweight stop Columbian Milton Nunez in the third round via TKO, which now sees the 160 lbs contender improve his record to 20-1-0 (13 KO).

The Cork man seemed to have history in his favour on the night right from the get go, with the legendary Mickey Ward accompanying him to the ring and been in his corner on the night.

O’Sullivan started the fight fast and some heavy body shots were landed in the first round on Nunez. Although Nunez fired back well at times, the first round went to the Irish man.

Spike’s power was prevalent from the start to the end of the contest, and at times he was really dishing out hurtful shots both to the body and to the head of his opponent. Nunez went down for an eight count in the second round and after some more heavy artillery was shipped in the third, the ref rightfully stepped in to wave off the action.

This win will move O’Sullivan up the middleweight rankings as he bids to become the first Cork man from Ireland to win a legitimate world title in the pro ranks.

Talks will turn now to bigger fights for the ‘Spike’ as his profile in the States no doubt has increased ten fold with impressive victories in Boston and now in New York in recent weeks. With O’Sullivan boxing regularly and hitting harder than ever under a new training regime, the future could be quite bright.

It marked a great night for the Irish on the weekend before St Patrick’s day overall, which was also backed up by another excellent result on the night that saw Dublin super featherweight Patrick ‘The Punisher’ Hyland record a 4th round KO win on the same bill. No doubt Irish celebrations in New York ahead of Patrick’s day will be plentiful.
