Mikey Garcia vs Juan Carlos Burgos Preview and Prediction

garcia 2

By Niall Doran

This weekend sees an explosive encounter for the WBO super featherweight championship at the Garden between defending champ Danny Garcia and Juan Carlos Burgos. Most of the focus will be on rising Mexican/American star Garcia but Burgos is certainly no mug and make no mistake, he will be coming to fight hard and trying everything possible to win.

Going into the fight Garcia is the man with the form enjoying a scintillatingly impressive and undefeated record of 33-0 with an awesome 28 of those coming by way of KO. Burgos on the other hand is coming off the back of two draws but has certainly mixed in decent class with one of those draws coming this time last year to the always game and well respected Roman Martinez.

Stylistically both men are orthodox, entertaining and for the most part come forward all action fighters, particularly Garcia! Height and reach are very similar with the slightest of slight advantages perhaps going to Burgos. He has never been stopped in his 30-1-2 fight career and Garcia will more than likely be using this as a motivation tool to become the first man to do so.

I’ve always been a massive fan of Garcia since I first watched him a couple of years ago. His hand speed was the first thing that stood out to me right off the bat, the man is bloody fast. Almost Amir Khan type fast hands which to watch in full flow is quite the sight. He obviously carries massive power on top of that which combined with the power can only result in one thing – other men going unconscious and falling onto the floor. At 26 years of age he could very well be just coming into his prime and to be honest I think he will be knocking on the door if not kicking it fully down by the end of the year, when it comes to cracking into most analysts top 10 pound for pound list.

A Mexican super featherweight dust up at Madison Square Garden? Can only spell one thing surely, fireworks and carnage!

My prediction – A Mikey Garcia points win or possibly by stoppage late on rounds 9-12
