Wade Takes One For The Middleweight Team

You could almost hear the collective sigh of relief echoing around the middleweight division with the news that middleweight wrecking ball Gennady Gennadyevich Golovkin “GGG” will be fighting the new IBF mandatory challenger Dominic Wade (18-0-12KO).

The IBF was forced to install Wade as the next available opponent for the feared  Golovkin after the previous opponent Tureano Johnson suffered an injury and was no longer available for the April  fight date.

Golovkin vs Wade will now take place at the Forum in Los Angeles, on Saturday 23 April. Wade (25) who  had a standout amateur career, highlighting his boxing credentials on way to becoming a four‐time Junior Olympic champion, is definitely a skilled and technical fighter.

But with only 18 bouts and 12 by way of KO as a professional to his name, and after arguably struggling in his last bout against 42 year old Sam Soliman with a split decision win (judge’s scorecards read –  Judge: Robert Byrd 95-94, Judge: Max DeLuca 93-96 and Judge: Robert Hoyle 97-92), this fight against someone of the calibre of Golovkin is frankly a bridge too far for the young American at this early stage of his development.
