Hold The Press We Have A “Problem” – Adrien Broner Shuts Out Media

Former three-weight division world champion Adrien “The Problem” Broner is a fighter that courts controversy and is always good value for a quote or two, but that maybe all about to change.

With the news that he will  be cutting off all contact with the media in regards to interviews in the lead up to his upcoming fight against Khabib Allakhverdiev (19-1, 9KO) in October in Cincinnati, which is for the vacant WBA world light-welterweight title, “The Problem” is certainly living up to his nickname.

Only the boxing gods (namely Al Haymon) know how Broner secured a title shot after his twelve round decision loss to Shawn Porter last June, but that is another issue.

Broner’s once promising career has been stuttering of late.

Add to that his antics outside and inside the ring and his now ill advised alienation of the boxing press, it is hardly an ideal situation for any professional sports person to lace themselves in, especially so when you consider he could perhaps use all the help he can get on the public relations front.

By him saying he will no longer take part in anymore press conferences, Broner has once again shown the depth of his over inflated sense of self-worth, and border line arrogance (in my opinion).

Small details like press conferences and good media relations are normally considered beneficial in a promotional sense, and are usually written into contracts that fighters must participate in.

Broner could do well to remember burning bridges is an ill advised venture, and understand that the boxing press and media are often important bridge between the fighters and fans.

A terrific fighter talent-wise, with all the ability in the world.

Let’s hope Broner gets back performing to his best and doing what he is capable of, in what was once a very bright and promising career, while hopefully involving the press again, to help tell his story to the fans.
