Undefeated Danny ‘Swift’ Garcia will fight Paulie ‘Magic Man’ Malignaggi at the Barclays Center, New York on August 1st.

Despite being the Junior-welterweight WBA champion, Garcia is again choosing not to defend the belt, instead opting to compete at welterweight. Sooner or later his title will be relinquished like his WBC version was.

On paper Garcia (27)  has a perfect record (30-0-0) having beaten recognizable names in the process. But the jury is still out on the American.

In his last bout with Lamont Peterson he was awarded the victory despite many thinking he lost. It was an unimpressive display and he fought ponderously.

Even his 2014 clash with Mauricio Herrera was deemed controversial but Garcia managed to somehow grasp onto his winning streak.

Garcia needs to beat Malignaggi convincingly to silence the doubters and prove himself as a top quality operator. Malinaggi also known as the ‘Magic Man’, will be hoping he faces the Garcia of recent times and not the fighter who defeated Lucas Matthysse in 2013.

Malignaggi (34) has lost two of his previous three fights. In his last outing, Shawn Porter ruthlessly exposed his defences and he endured perilous punishment, eventually being KO’d in round four.

It could be a dangerous encounter for Malignaggi considering the uncertainty over which Garcia will show up. Maybe he feels he has the ability to capitalise on Garcia’s recent vulnerable showings.

But if he comes up short, he should contemplate retirement. Malignaggi is an excellent pundit and commentator. Boxing would benefit from his knowledge.

For Garcia this is a must not lose. A defeat would raise even more questions over his contentious prior results and more people will become skeptical about whether or not he is a world class fighter.

On August 1st Danny Garcia has to enter the ring and exhibit malevolence to silence his critics. Mallignaggi on the other hand will be aiming to cause a big upset and resurrect his career.
