Floyd Mayweather thinks McGregor could be the biggest fight of all time.
The biggest one in boxing history to date, at least financially, was Mayweather vs Pacquiao back in 2015.
We recently did a PPV buys look at what Mayweather vs McGregor could generate here, and without doubt, it could be the biggest combats sports event revenue-wise.
From a purely boxing standpoint as far as the sport goes though, many within it including purists and promoters alike have lambasted the idea of it coming to fruition.
Rival promoter to Mayweather and former foe Oscar De La Hoya said this week that it would be bad for boxing.
But would it really? I’m not sure it would.
It’s something that would create a lot of cross-over appeal and get people interested in watching boxing, which can only be a good thing if it draws more eyes on the sport right?
I can’t see how it could be as bad to watch as what Mayweather vs Pacquiao was – from a common sports fan perspective, too.
To boxing purists, Mayweather put on a clinic that night though but general sports fans are also important to consider outside of the ‘hard-cores’ when putting on a fight of this size.
Just on (that) fight back in 2015 again briefly. It was up to Pacquiao to make more of a fight of it in my opinion anyway.
Mayweather did what he’s always done that night.
Speaking this weekend at his 40th birthday party celebrations Floyd Mayweather said of the McGregor fight:
“It’s all about entertainment. That can be the biggest fight in the history of the sport. We just don’t know. We’ll just see. The thing that we do know is that Conor McGreogor has never lost standing up. We’ve seen him lose before on the ground. But on his feet Conor McGregor can fight and he got power.”
