Lucian Bute returns in impressive fashion

The man who was dismantled by Carl “The Cobra” Froch not long ago, did his own dismantling last night, in a performance that showed he might very well be returning to some of the form the saw him become IBF super middleweight champion.

Following a 19 month spell out of the ring, the Romanian born, Canadian-based favourite enjoyed a stellar four round TKO victory over Andrea Di Luisa of Italy, in front of his home fans at the Bell Center in Montreal.

Bute had not boxed since January of 2014, when he was defeated over the duration by Jean Paschal in a catchweight bout, but ring rust didn’t appear to be an issue as he looked very relaxed early on, getting his timing down in the opening round and establishing who was the boss.

You could tell Bute grew into the fight and was finding his feet in the second, when in the third round he started unloading on his opponent.

This powerful Bute southpaw left hand was to prove too much for Di Luisa who looked out of his depth, and in the fourth round was sent to the canvas by a devastating one punch backhand from Bute.

Although he beat the count, he received more of the same treatment when he rose to his feet – so much so that his corner had seen enough and threw the towel in to rescue their man.

Is Lucian Bute back? It’s hard to say, one would have to see him get in there with a world level opponent to answer such a question, fairly.

But one thing’s for sure, the 35 year old certainly looked like he had some of his old swagger back last night and you can’t argue with the stoppage, a very impressive finish indeed.
