Inspiring Late Bloomer Boxer Ben Day Eyes Southern Area Title

Recently we had the pleasure to catch up with one of the UK’s most charismatic fighters – boxer Ben Day. And a supremely talented one too, rising quick through the ranks at the moment (7-0-1, 2KO) Ben Day (37) is a fighter who is not letting age or lack of boxing experience get in the way of his goals.

Our conversation started off with a focus on his next immediate bout, which will be against Ryan Taylor for the vacant Southern Area light-middleweight title on December 5th at the iconic York Hall in London.

Ben is deep into preparation at the minute, and gave us a good insight into what he is currently going through day to day to get himself ready for his Southern Area title challenge:

“Preparation has never been better, having finally mastered the 3rd principle of training from the rest, train and diet protocol. I have a nutritionist/trainer Greg White who has put me on a vegan diet and I have this new form of energy I’ve never encountered before in my boxing career.

I am currently under my fighting weight and have crazy energy levels. I’ve been getting my sparring down at Rod Julian’s gym in Chingford against some very experienced seasoned professionals. I also own Ringtone Boxing Gym in Euston and in previous fights have had to deal with the pressure of running a business whilst in training camp. But this time round Greg White has taken full control of the gyms affairs, so I can fully concentrate on my title fight.”

The chat next turned to his upcoming opponent specifically, Ryan Taylor. We wanted to know did Ben know much about Taylor, and what kind of test he was expecting.

Ben mentioned he has looked at Taylor closely ahead of December 5th:

“Ryan has had a glittering amateur career with over 70 fights (70 more than me haha). He’s fought for the Southern Area title twice before and also featured in the Prizefighter series, which means he’s had a lot of experience in the pro game.

Ryan is a come forward fighter who attacks the body well, which is why I have to be elusive and stick to my game plan. This is the biggest test of my boxing career, but if you don’t have these types of tests in life it’s not worth living. I’m relishing the opportunity – the bigger the test the bigger the opportunity.”

As the interview drew to an end, this reporter made the rookie mistake of asking “should” as opposed to “when”, when asking Ben what the plans were next if he were to get past Taylor.

Ben concluded our chat ahead of December 5th bout by saying:

“Should? WHEN I get past Ryan I will keep busy and active as much as I can. I feel now I’ve got the right winning formula, I can go down to lightweight due to this good nutrition with no struggle and carry my power with it. My long-term goal is to fight and win the British title and inspire others to follow their dreams.”
