Ukraine need more weapons and are getting them to end Vladimir Putin’s Russia and their war.
Hungary it has been widely reported yet again trying to stop that from happening on their own in the EU in that.
The EU can ignore Hungary’s attempts to block funds for weapons to Ukraine in a number of ways.
- Use of Qualified Majority Voting (QMV)
The EU can use its qualified majority voting (QMV) system to make decisions on a range of issues, including the provision of military assistance to Ukraine.
This means that if 55% of member states vote in favor of a proposal, it will be adopted, even if Hungary votes against it.
- Financial pressure
The EU could also put financial pressure on Hungary to change its position. This could include withholding funding for EU projects in Hungary, or imposing sanctions on Hungarian individuals and businesses.
- Diplomacy
The EU could also try to persuade Hungary to change its position through diplomacy. This could involve high-level talks between EU leaders and Hungarian officials, or the use of EU ambassadors to Hungary.
- Public pressure
Finally, the EU could try to put public pressure on Hungary to change its position. This could involve public statements from EU leaders, or campaigns by civil society groups in Hungary and other EU countries.
It is important to note that there is no guarantee that any of these measures will be successful in persuading Hungary to change its position. However, the EU has a number of tools at its disposal, and it is likely to continue to use them in an effort to ensure that Hungary does not block its efforts to support Ukraine.
In addition to the above, the EU could also take the following steps to discount Hungary’s position:
- Work with other countries
The EU could work with other countries, such as the United States and the United Kingdom, to provide military assistance to Ukraine without the participation of Hungary. This would allow the EU to continue to support Ukraine without being held hostage to Hungary’s veto.
- Isolate Hungary
The EU could isolate Hungary politically and economically. This could involve suspending Hungary’s membership in the EU’s decision-making bodies, or imposing sanctions on Hungarian businesses.
This would make it more difficult for Hungary to block EU action on Ukraine, and it would also send a signal to other countries that they should not expect to be able to block EU action by using a veto.
- Change the EU treaties
The EU could change the EU treaties to remove the need for unanimity on certain issues, such as the provision of military assistance to Ukraine. This would make it more difficult for Hungary to block EU action on Ukraine in the future.
