Provided he wins he is then expected to take on Billy Joe Saunders of the UK in the summer.
If he were to get through that, the other names being talked about for him are the likes of Charlo and Caleb Plant.
Both very credible challengers but the truth is — there are loads of solid opponents out there for Alvarez.
Three of them perhaps not as well known to some but certainly worth a mention:
David Benavidez (Super-middleweight)
The undefeated 24-year-old has a lot of range and power and is a fearless world champion in his own right.
The man from Phoenix, Arizona competes next month and is a fighter improving all the time and will no doubt go after Alvarez relentlessly in due course.
Edgar Berlanga (Super-Middleweight)
This 23-year-old wrecking machine has come out of nowhere over the last twelve months or so.
Unreal fighter, dynamite.
At 16-0-16 KO he has put together three explosive stoppage wins on the bounce inside the Top Rank bubble in Las Vegas.
The Brooklyn, New Yorker of Puerto Rican decent showing just how much of a professional fighter he really is with that alone.
The discipline and performances chalked in during a horrific time for the world while done so in a bubble speaks volumes about him.
He has taken the bull by the horns during the world situation.
Expect big things for him.
Jaime Munguia (Middleweight)
24-year-old Mexican knockout artist Munguia is surely on track to becoming a Canelo opponent at some point.
The all-Mexican battle would be a gigantic draw, obviously.
Both fan favorites.
The fight styles and sheer ferocity of bombs that would be exchanged would be awesome.
Some real chaos to look forward to in the ring.
