This weekend will go down in the sport of boxing’s history books for positive reasons and moreover — for a very, very long time.
In many ways this weekend’s heavyweight title bout between Tyson Fury and Deontay Wilder encompassed all the great things about big time boxing.
Two warriors who gave it their all and left it in the ring.
Two charismatic pugilists who put it on the line.
Two guys who put themselves through the mill in preparation and ultimately on fight night, two professional fighters who delivered a hugely entertaining bout.
Fury won the fight well in the end and some fans have suggested that the bout was stopped prematurely in round 7.
With respect, this couldn’t be further from the truth however.
Wilder’s coach Mark Breland was spot on in my view to throw the towel in when he did to save Deontay for the next battle.
Perhaps Deontay’s former promoter Lou Di Bella has summed it up best with this:

Mark Breland saw blood coming from the ear of his boxer and ultimately made a judgement call.
Letting his fighter continue for any further time last night would have just resulted in a man taking unnecessary damage.
Deontay Wilder is still one of the best heavyweight fighters in the world and saving him for his next fight was absolutely the right call.
