Boxing star Mikey Garcia recently suffered the first loss of his professional boxing career against Errol Spence.
A loss that was expected in many quarters in fairness. He was always going to be up against it.
Garcia stepped up an entire two weight classes to challenge Spence in his home State of Texas for the IBF welterweight crown in what turned out to be a one-side unanimous points decision for Spence in the end.
It did get Garcia’s star out there even more however in what was a hugely successful live event that pulled nearly 48,000 fans on the night in Texas.
Many speculated after the fight that Garcia could go straight back down to his usual weight class of lightweight where he is still a champion.
Not potentially the case however.
ESPN Mexico have reported that Garcia is now set to vacate his WBC lightweight crown and become the WBC ‘Emeritus’ champion instead.
Whatever that means.
Basically, Garcia could return at welterweight again or even junior welterweight potentially.
Or just take a long break and come back at lightweight.
Whatever the case might be he’s leaving his options open and taking a slight break from professional boxing it appears.
At the moment he’s getting ready for an exhibition bout soon with none other than Mexican boxing legend Erik Morales.
It is thought that the UK’s Luke Campbell could step into the fold to challenge for Garcia’s vacated belt in the near future against an opponent to be confirmed.
