Former undisputed cruiserweight king pin Usyk is expected to make a move to the heavyweight division next up for his first fight at some point in 2019 and could find himself in a mandatory position for one of the champions earlier than a lot of people think.
The Ukraine boxing phenom has been linked with Russian Alexander Povetkin for his first fight at heavyweight — a tough, credible introduction to the glamor division of boxing if ever there was one to be fair.
But, if he were to handle Povetkin impressively and show that he can carry enough power that at least is to be respected at heavyweight by some of the division’s top contenders, could he be the real dark horse in the heavyweight division all along?
Everyone is talking about the big three at the moment — Anthony Joshua, Tyson Fury and Deontay Wilder.
And rightly so, but, what an addition to the mix Usyk would be if he can continue his form up at heavyweight that he’s exhibited throughout his career today.
News of his first opponent at heavyweight is expected to be made official very soon.
One suspects the reason the slick southpaw has gone quiet for so long now since his win over Tony Bellew last November is because he’s working hard in the gym behind the scenes, putting the necessary additional weight on himself needed before venturing into a division where literally one punch can end a nigh.
