Respected boxing trainer and analyst Teddy Atlas is back in the sport at the moment training current WBC light-heavyweight champion Oleksandr Gvozdyk who makes his latest defense of his newly won title at the end of the month.
He won the belt last time out back in December in an impressive win over previous champion Adonis Stevenson who sadly suffered injury to the brain after the bout.
Thankfully, Stevenson is recovering extremely well every day according to latest reports.
Speaking on his new podcast ‘The Fight with Teddy Atlas’ Teddy also touches on a number of subjects in the sport outside of fighters he works with directly.
A big topic of conversation at the moment is of course the heavyweight landscape between Anthony Joshua, Deontay Wilder and Tyson Fury — all battling it out at the top to try to prove who is the best.
Atlas while speaking on his podcast brought up the fact however that he doesn’t think Joshua’s amateur credentials are as good as people think they are.
He said:
“The Brits ain’t going to like this. Where’s my adviser before I open my mouth? I did the Olympics for NBC. The full Olympics in London in 2012. Joshua won the Gold medal. He lost to the Italian. He lost to him. I called the fight. There was no way he was going to lose in London. Alright. What do you think, they were going to go back and talk about the snooker champion? No, they wanted an Olympic heavyweight champion. If they were going to host the Olympics they were going to have a heavyweight champ, and they did.”
He added:
“The point is he’s got flaws. He looks good, you put him in with the right guy he’s going to do well. He’s undefeated, he sells a lot of fans in the seats over there (UK) 90,000 wow, he’s good for boxing, he handles himself outside the ring, he’s talks well. He’s a gentleman. It’s all good you guys. But, part of the interest where we can even talk about this, again, he’s not (Mike )Tyson was Tyson. He doesn’t have that feel to him. He does stand up straight. He is predictable. He is one dimensional. Again, I’m not knocking him. Can’t I just do my job?”
Joshua next faces Jarrell Miller on June 1st at Madison Square Garden.
