Today it was formally confirmed that Anthony Joshua will defend his heavyweight titles on June 1st at Madison Square Garden in New York against fringe contender Jarrell ‘Bib Baby’ Miller.
Joshua’s next fight was previously scheduled for April 13th at Wembley stadium for an attempted fight against Deontay Wilder, Dillian Whyte and even Tyson Fury but every single effort to make either of those fights failed in the end.
Speaking today on the announcement Joshua said of the reason for the fight:
“I will be defending my titles in New York. You know, Wembley is so close to my heart. It’s a great spot, it’s a great location. I’ve fought in small halls and I’ve fought in arenas, its been humbling fighting in the stadiums. But now it’s time for a change.”
He added:
“The current state of the heavyweight division is the undisputed heavyweight champion of the world. Myself and Deontay Wilder (WBC champion) are the current active heavyweight champions of the world and we were looking to get that fight on April 13th but things happen, boxing politics, as I’m sure you guys are aware. So we had to look at other options.”
At this time 29 year old Joshua holds a professional boxing record of 22-0-21KO.
