Three-weight world champion and Mexican boxing warrior Leo Santa Cruz knows a thing or two about strategy in world title fights at the highest level.
In his second fight with Belfast’s Carl Frampton in particular, he showed he can switch things up nicely and implement game plans as good as anyone in boxing today.
This past weekend in Las Vegas’ big fight Manny Pacquiao defeated Adrien Broner by unanimous weekend and many believed Broner’s undoing was simply not throwing enough punches in the fight.
Speaking to Fight Hype, Santa Cruz this is sentiment that he also expressed:
“Broner didn’t throw enough. He’s a really great fighter. He has great power and he throws good punches and everything but I think he should have let his hands go and he could have given Pacquiao a better fight. I think Pacquiao won but it was a good fight. Pacquiao is a great fighter — I always enjoy watching his fights.”
He added:
“He (Broner) was counter punching him a little bit but it wasn’t enough. I think he is scared to listen and (scared of) getting tired and that he is going to gas out (in a fight).”
Santa Cruz (35-1-1-19KO) returns to action himself next month on February 16th when he takes on Miguel Flores in LA when he defends his WBA super-featherweight title at the Microsoft Theatre.
