Former pound for pound number one boxer in the world Andre Ward retired in recent years after back to back wins over nemesis Sergey Kovalev.
Despite that however, he has since continued to be linked with the sport as a pundit and commentator and also manages a number of up and coming young prospects including US Olympian Shakur Stevenson.
In various interviews in recent years Ward hasn’t exactly ruled out a comeback to the sport either.
He’s been linked with a host of names to come back and in the grand scheme of things, when you consider how young ‘Dre’ was when he retired, it wouldn’t be all that surprising to hear he’s coming back to boxing.
Now for the first time however, a promoter has revealed he’s actively pursuing Ward to come out of retirement.
Boxing promoter Eddie Hearn has told Sky Sports Boxing that he’s trying to get Ward back to boxing for a showdown with undisputed cruiserweight king Oleksandr Usyk in 2019.
Usyk recently defeated Tony Bellew inside the distance in his last fight which took place in Manchester, UK earlier this year.
While the above might be a long shot by Hearn, fair play to him for at least trying.
One gets the impression that this activity could spark others to try to lure the former pound for pound maestro back to boxing during a time where the sport is flourishing worldwide at professional level.
