Irishman TJ Doheny Becomes IBF World Champion

TJ Doheny from Portlaois in Ireland is celebrating a famous win earlier today in Japan that saw him capture the IBF super-bantamweight championship of the world.

Fighting on away soil Doheny was not to be denied.

His shot at the IBF title had been a long time coming after coming through a long, painfully slow final elimination process over the last couple of years.

He captured the title with an impressive unanimous points win on away soil from previous champion Ryosuke Iwasa and extended his professional record to 20-0-14KO.

He did the majority of his best work in the first half of the bout, with Iwasa coming back strong in the second half of the championship fight.

But Doheny finished the twelfth and final round strong in true champion fashion to score a famous win from a previously very good Japanese champion.

Doheny had a small but loud crowd with him from both Australia and Ireland in Japan earlier who no doubt will celebrate long into the night.

Congrats to TJ Doheny on becoming boxing’s latest world champion.
