De La Hoya Says GGG vs Canelo Rematch Will Happen In September

Golden Boy Promotions founder and former world champion Oscar De La Hoya has leaked some exciting news at an event earlier today in the US.

The ongoing negotiations for the Gennady Golovkin vs Canelo Alvarez rematch appear to be going very well as Canelo serves out the remainder of his six month ban following a failed drugs test before the previously scheduled date earlier this month.

Speaking today at an event in California alongside ‘Sugar’ Ray Leonard De La Hoya said of the rematch while speaking to Ray:

“Yeah for the fight in May (Golovkin vs Canelo)? But if fell off. But it’s September. Yeah (nodding his head at Ray) – it’s going to happen. We’re close.”

Perhaps De La Hoya wasn’t aware there was so much media around him while speaking to Ray – but what great news for boxing fans.

Realistically it was always going to happen again in September in Las Vegas.

Both men are currently taking some down time but when the official news is confirmed in the coming weeks expect their training camps to start around the end of June or start of July.

Golovkin confirmed earlier this week that he will be undergoing random testing for his next fight – so expect the same from Canelo when this is formally announced.
