Jessie Vargas Reveals Why He Left Top Rank For Al Haymon

Welterweight contender Jessie Vargas returns to the ring this weekend against Adrien Broner in New York.

The fight will take place as part of a PBC event at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn and sees in his first major fight since losing to Manny Pacquiao in 2016.

One win last year against Aaron Herrera via unanimous decision erased that memory but the Las Vegas local will be looking to put on an even more impressive show this weekend knowing Broner’s scalp could put him back in the big time.

It wasn’t long ago that Vargas was promoted by Bob Arum’s Top Rank before making the change to switch over to Al Haymon’s side of the street.

Asked in a Reddit discussion about why he left Top Rank to go to Al Haymon’s PBC – Vargas said:

“Well, I already had a past relationship with Al Haymon and I liked the way he worked, and that’s the reason why I made the change. I like how he does business.”

Later in the discussion Vargas also commented on this week’s Canelo Alvarez’ suspension of six months following a recent failed drugs test before the proposed Gennady Golovkin 160lbs title rematch:

“You know, I don’t have enough knowledge to really give my perspective. But anyone that is trying to use any illegal substance should be severely punished. This sport is serious business, it’s not a game, you’re in there to hurt someone and the help of any substance, there should definitely be some backlash to it.”

Vargas fights this weekend live on Showtime against Adrien Broner at a catch weight of 144lbs.
