Irishman Andy Lee has retired from the sport of boxing today and has given his reasons as the boxing world reacts to news of the 33-year-old retiring.

Lee became WBO middleweight world champion and was involved in a number of exciting fights through the years.

Starting off his pro career with legendary trainer Emanuel Steward, he finished it with renowned British trainer Adam Booth whom he became world champion with.

Speaking on Off The Ball in Ireland, Andy Lee said:

“I’m not quite sure how to say it but I’ve come to the decision to retire from professional boxing. it’s a good decision. It feels good.”

He added

“It’s time now. It’s the right time now. 33 years old. I’ve achieved everything I want in the game. Its been on my mind for a while. I kept myself available to see what my options were, if a fight came along that enticed me back (but it didn’t).”

On why he made the decision he said:

“None of the offers were good enough or big enough to go back. I’ve a responsibility now as a father. To leave my wife and daughter to go away from them to a training camp would take a big offer.”

Andy Lee retires with a professional boxing record of 35-3-1-24KO.
