The welterweight champion had a huge 2017 after defeating Danny Garcia and then getting married but he’s eyeing even bigger goals this year.

Thurman could easily be one of the most fun welterweights to watch out there at the moment – when he wants to be.

When he’s in the mood and starts letting go of those hands, he has the power to turn the lights off for anyone at welterweight.

Moreover, it’s a division that is packed full of talent now including the likes of him, Porter, Garcia, Crawford and Khan and hopefully Thurman by the end of the year will have fought at least one of those names.

But speaking to Fight Hub TV, Thurman was keen to impress upon the fact that he wants his legacy to be at welterweight and not moving up in divisions:

“I don’t want to be the undisputed 154lbs if I grab a title at 154lbs, I’m not trying to be the man at the weight class above, I’m trying to be the man who I already knew I was going to naturally fight and compete at.”

Fairly sensible from Thurman in many ways as he doesn’t really have the frame perhaps to go through the weights and moving up a weight wouldn’t exactly bring about bigger fights for him, either.

Moving up two weights would not be possible for a fighter like Thurman you’d have to think – but fair play to him for focusing on what’s in front of him – which is plenty of live fights at welterweight.
