Fighting Irishman O’Sullivan Looking To Cap A Big Year Abroad

Fighting Irishman Gary “Spike” O’Sullivan has bounced back in style in 2017 and had a stellar year fighting in the States. Now, he’s looking to finish it with a bang live on HBO.

Cork man O’Sullivan has only come up short twice as a professional against elite level competition in the form of Billy Joe Saunders and Chris Eubank Jr – on both occasions struggling with a persistent old ear injury.

That injury is well and truly a thing of the past however, as 2018 has clearly conveyed.

The Mahon native from Cork city (in the South of Ireland, a three-hour drive from Dublin approximately) has put three back to back stoppage victories together in 2017.

All of which happened in the State of Massachusetts as it happens.

Like many Irish before him, it’s proven a happy hunting ground and land of opportunity.

His last fight there was shown live on ESPN against Nick Quigley in last September where he took the Englishman out inside four rounds – in what was an engrossing spectacle from start to finish.

This weekend he’s on his travels to Canada and will look to make it four wins this year against Antoine “Action” Douglas.

The bout will feature as chief support on the Billy Joe Saunders vs David Lemieux WBO middleweight world title card shown live on HBO.

Speaking ahead of the fight, O’Sullivan said:

“It’s absolutely fantastic to fight here on HBO! It’s a very big opportunity, and it’s nice to be here. To me, fighting out-of-town makes no difference because I fought most of my career out-of-town – the US, the UK, and I come from Ireland.”

Trained out of the Celtic Warriors Gym in Dublin, O’Sullivan is guided by long-time coach and mentor Paschal Collins.

33-year-old O’Sullivan’s record stands at 28 fights 26 Wins (18 KO) ahead of Saturday’s bout.
