This Stephen Smith ear injury has to be up there with one of the most gruesome in recent sweet science memory. Absolutely car crash stuff.

Smith travelled to Las Vegas this weekend to bravely battle Francisco Vargas this weekend and although he didn’t get the win, he was lucky in the end to come away with his ear.

Ultimately the bout went to the scorecards after 9 rounds due to what can only be described as one of the worst ear injuries ever seen in boxing took place following an accidental clash of heads.

A freak accident, in truth.

Vargas got the nod on the scorecards but the Stephen Smith ear injury was the main story of the night in Sin City.

This video actually shows in slow motion highlights of the extent of how bad the injury was:

Dear lord, tough to watch indeed.

Smith has been unfortunate in world title fights in recent years and big fights alike like last night. Part of the famed Smith fighting brothers in Liverpool, don’t expect this to be the end of him though.

One would imagine after a period of rest on the ear that he will be chomping at the bit again to get back into world title contention in 2018.
