Commentator Jim Lampley reacts following the final chapter in the boxing career of Puerto Rico’s Miguel Cotto.

No doubt there was a few teary eyes in the house at Madison Square Garden this weekend, as one of its most famed fighting sons of recent memory made his 10th and final appearance at the iconic venue.

It wasn’t to be a win in the end for Cotto on his final fight of his career, whom succumbed to a points loss to Sadam Ali but like he always did – Cotto fought with his heart on his sleeve and entertained the fans.

His legacy will surely be remembered as good as any Puerto Rican boxers in history and as one of the most fearless and well-loved boxers of his time.

Willing to fight the best. Consistently.

Following the fight HBO commentator Jim Lampley paid a superb, emotion-filled tribute to Cotto that said it best:

Well said.

What Cotto does next will be interesting. Likely, he will stay in the sport in some shape or form one would expect. Possibly as a promoter if this writer was to hazard a guess.

But with that excellent temperament and patience that he was blessed with during his career – who’s to say he can’t go on to be a great trainer one day too.

Everyone at Boxing News and Views wishes him all the very best in retirement.
