Oscar De La Hoya Criticises How Deontay Wilder Is Promoted

The former world champion turned promoter Oscar De La Hoya criticises how the American heavyweight champion is being pushed.

Not long ago De La Hoya was the man promoting Wilder.

Not long after De La Hoya in fact retired from boxing as an active fighter himself and made the transition into the promotional world.

Indeed, De La Hoya certainly knows a thing or two about promotion with his company Golden Boy Promotions having been involved with some big fights in the recent past.

Notably the recent Golovkin vs Canelo co-promotion with ‘GGG’ promoter Tom Loeffler.

The former Olympic Gold medallist and ten-time world champion has gone on the offensive at how he thinks America’s only current heavyweight champion is being promoted at the moment, saying on Twitter:

“I promoted @BronzeBomber first 33 fights and made him a champion, if I was his promoter he would be a star and @anthonyfjoshua would be begging for the fight and not the other way around.”

Negotiations are currently understood to be underway between Joshua and Wilder’s teams for a heavyweight title unification match in 2018.

Joshua is understood to be by far the ‘A-Side’ in the negotiations with his star status in comparison to Wilder’s at present.
