De La Hoya Responds To Controversial GGG-Canelo Scorecard

Promoter of the event Oscar De La Hoya responds to what was an incredible score on one scorecard in the Golovkin vs Canelo fight in Vegas.

22,358 was the official attendance last night for the Golovkin vs Canelo fight which was a new record for a boxing match at the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas.

However much of the boxing world is fuming at one scorecard today that incredibly saw one judge of the bout score the fight 118-110 in favor of Canelo Alvarez.

The broadcasters of the event, HBO, had it pretty wide in favor of Golovkin. I personally thought it was a lot closer though. I had it by Golovkin 2 rounds but for someone to see it 8 rounds in favor of Canelo is clearly a bad night had by someone.

The judge in question, Adelaide Byrd’s scorecard came in for a lot of flack after the fight. Promoter Oscar De La Hoya said afterwards:

“A lot of people are not understanding 118-110 like myself. That’s the bottom line. I have to say that Byrd, yes, is a competent judge. She’s been doing lots of world titles for many years but yes 118-110, okay, yeah, yes it is. I can understand 115-113 and the draw 114-114. Personally I had it 7-5 (rounds) Canelo and people can argue it could have gone either way because it was such a great fight. And that’s the bottom line.”

He added:

“I do feel bad for Adelaide Byrd for taking a lot of heat now. 118-110 was pretty widespread I have to admit. But look this is boxing and she’s been a competent judge for many, many years and Las Vegas is one of the best Commissions in the world.”
