Robert Guerrero retires from professional boxing but leaves behind him a legacy to be envied within the sport after a remarkable career.

When I think of Robert Guerrero the word ‘warrior’ immediately springs to mind.

A class act who in many ways embodies what old school boxers were. A man who let his fists do the talking and never let trash talking become part of his arsenal like so many do now.

Even when faced with one of the best trash talkers of this generation in Floyd Mayweather, Guerrero never bit and instead carried himself with humility throughout the pre-fight build-up.

But from a boxing perspective alone, Guerrero achieved more than most ever do in what after all, is arguably the hardest way to make a living of them all.

Professional fighting.

Robert Joseph Guerrero became a six-time world champion in a remarkable four different weight classes during his time as a professional boxer between 2001 and 2017.

He fought some of the best fighters available to him of his time. Casamayor, Katsidis, Berto, Mayweather, Garcia and Thurman to name but a few.

Perhaps his legacy will be best encapsulated not by his many world titles in many different weight classes and tough opposition, but his attitude and example he left for the next generation of young fighters coming up.

Carl Frampton said it best this week – he was one of the toughest fighters of his generation. All the best in retirement, Robert.
