Dmitry Sukhotskiy travels to Australia to fight for the vacant WBA Oceania Title on July 14th. We caught up with him ahead of his fight.
Australian boxing is riding the crest of a wave after last weekend’s stunning upset win when 29 year old Jeff Horn dethroned the WBO welterweight champion Manny Pacquiao.
A result that has come in for some heavy criticism.
The judges’ scorecards 117-111 (Waleska Roldan), 115-113 (Chris Flores) and 115-113 (Ramon Cerdan) in the bout dubbed the ‘Battle of Brisbane’ had many industry insiders and fans pushing the plate away, sitting a heavy dose of home cooking that was to hard to swallow.

Can history repeat itself?
Next stop The Melbourne Pavilion, Victoria, Australia on the 14th of July will see the two-time world championship challenger 36 year old Dmitry ‘The Hunter’ Sukhotskiy (23-5-0, 16KO) takes on the tough and durable southpaw Australian Blake Caparello (24-2-1, 8KO) for the vacant WBA Oceania light-heavyweight title.
In light of the “controversial” decision last weekend, Boxing News and Views took the opportunity to spoke to the visiting fighter from Russia.
BNAV: Dmitry thank you for taking time out of your busy schedule to speak with us, how is your current training camp and preparations going?
DS: Gavin your are coming with me on my next camp so you can see for yourself. I have never enjoyed any previous camps like I have this one.
I have a new conditioning trainer who believes in making my cardio and training fun and everyday is new and rewarding. I feel fresh.
BNAV: Anyone who knows you knows you are a fighter who is always in shape year round, but do you feel you’re new camp setup has benefited you in a mentally more stable way due to a more relaxed and fun approach?
DS: Definitely. I feel a lot more relaxed, more composed and focused. I can see exactly what I need to do and exactly how I will do it.
BNAV: Did your see the Pac v Horn fight and how did you score it?
DS: Yes I watched the fight and I had Pac as the winner. I think the judges called it wrong but let’s be honest myself and boxing fans have seen worse calls in boxing lately, especially with the Ward vs Kovalev fights. But that’s another story and another article.
BNAV: Are you in anyway apprehensive or worried about a similar situation happening in your fight?
DS: Unfortunately yes. I don’t believe in fair judgements anymore not just because of last weekend’s result but because of a host of results though out the history of boxing. That’s why the judges won’t be an issue in my next fight – it’s in my hands.
