Parker vs Cojanu Full Fight Report

A possible unification fight for Parker could be just around the corner against Anthony Joshua or Deontay Wilder after the New Zealand heavyweight extended his unbeaten record to 23-0-18KO today.

They will no doubt be chomping at the bit for a shot at his world title after an easy unanimous points win – but a rather less than impressive display and overall fight today in New Zealand.

Initially Parker was due to take on the UK’s Hughie Fury in Auckland today, but the Englishman was forced to postpone the fight due to a late back injury sustained.

It will be interesting to see whether Parker and his team will look for the Fury fight again or if they will go straight to a unification fight next up if the opportunity arises.

Talks of a possible Dillian Whyte and Tony Bellew heavyweight fights in the UK have also been mooted.

Today Parker took on Romanian Razvan Cojanu as his last minute replacement and did enough to get the win.

Straight off the bat, Parker pressed the action on the front foot and looked to let go his fast and powerful combinations on his former training partner.

The speed difference was evident from the beginning. The size advantage was with Cojanu who weighed 29lbs more than Parker today.

Parker landed the right hand with a bit more regularity in round 2. His speed was proving difficult to deal with for his bigger, but slower foe.

25 year old WBO champion Parker looked a little frustrated in round 3 in what proved to be a scrappy three minutes all round.

Parker started round 4 well and landed some solid right hands and left hooks. Cojanu had a point taken off him for constant holding of Parker’s neck.

Parker started to open up and land a bit more freely in this round.

Cojanu had a slightly better round in the fifth, catching the champion with some decent right hands and causing some frustration for Parker.

Round 7 was another scrappy one for Parker, who’s power didn’t seem to bother his opponent – who had been stopped once before in his career.

Cojanu was talking to Parker in round 8th, mind games seemingly working a bit for him – but not throwing enough punches. Parker was winning the fight easily.

Parker bagged the 9th round on shots landed but it seemed like the snap in his punches were starting to wane a bit.

Towards the end of round 10 a bit of a fight finally looked like it was breaking out, as Cojanu waved Parker in for a toe to toe exchange at the end of the round.

That was short lived however as Parker looked like he was getting tired in the 11th and it seemed like it was a case of coasting through the rest of the fight to get the win for the champion.

Parker closed out the final round in similar fashion to the majority of the fight, doing enough to get the win. No doubt his rivals will be looking at today’s performance with a smile.

All in all, today’s heavyweight title fight certainly was not of the entertainment level of Anthony Joshua vs Klitschko last week at Wembley but Parker got the job done and moves on.
