WBO featherweight world champion Oscar Valdez overcame a hard a fought battle this weekend to hold onto his title belt in Carson, California.

Boxing on the outdoor show put on by Top Rank, Valdez defeated Miguel Marriaga via a 12 round unanimous decision that included a knockdown of Marriaga at one point.

Valdez was more than willing to stand toe to toe with his challenger and trade in the fight early on.

As the bout progressed into the middle rounds Marriaga had perhaps his best success, out boxing Valdez in patches and controlling the tempo.

Valdez dug in deep though and dropped Marriaga in the tenth round. It was the champion who closed out the show strongest but he was made to work extremely hard for his win on the night.

The win improved Valdez’ record to 22-0-19KO. The featherweight division is a deep one at the minute with plenty of elite level fighters around the world.
