Nico Hernandez makes winning start to his professional debut in Kansas.

Nico Hernandez, a 2016 Rio Bronze medallist got off to an impressive start to his professional boxing tenure as he put on a strong display in front of hometown fans at the Kansas Star Casino.

The 21 year old stopped Pat Gutierrez in the fourth round which was shown live via the CBS sports network on TV in the US.

There was a passionate hometown crowd in attendance. At least 3,000 hometown fans came out to support Hernandez on his debut.

After a tentative opener Hernandez slipped into his groove in the second round. He displayed excellent punch variation to both the head and the body.

The third round saw more of the same. Hernandez got his opponent up against the ropes and started to tee off some hurtful combinations.

By the fourth round the overwhelming pressure from Nico Hernandez was proving too much for the brave Gutierrez. He was now dealing with a foe in front of him who was even switching stances.

The referee had seen enough by the fourth round and called halt to proceedings to give Hernandez his first professional win.

A future star in US boxing might well have been born. Here’s a clip from the bout of Nico Hernandez in action on his debut:
