Promoter Oscar De La Hoya on why Canelo and Chavez Jr is very personal ahead of their upcoming fight in Las Vegas.

While there has been a lot of talk about the whole Canelo vs Golovkin fight happening in September, the reality is he (Canelo) first has his hands full with a considerable task against Julio Cesar Chavez Jr on May 6th.

He will be fighting a man much heavier and bigger than him. It’s an all Mexican grudge match that’s apparently been building behind the scenes for some time too.

Speaking on this dislike and the fight weight, Canelo promoter Oscar De La Hoya of Golden Boy Promotions told Fight Hype that:

“It’s very personal for Canelo and Chavez. They just don’t like each other. That fight has been in the making for many years. It’s been in the making for 8 or 9 years, Canelo-Chavez. So he (Canelo) wanted to fight Chavez at 164lbs before he gets even bigger. Before he moves up to light-heavyweight.”

Canelo and Chavez Jr represents one of those fun fights that don’t come along very often between two well followed Mexican warriors.

Fights of the modern day boxing past between the likes of Barrera and Morales, and those involving Juan Manuel Marques are legendary.

Now Canelo and Chavez Jr get their opportunity to etch their names into Mexican boxing history.

A chance which in itself, has already motivated Chavez Jr to lose a remarkable amount of weight according to recent training reports.
