Gennady Golovkin vs Canelo who wins? Lets play devils advocate for a second and consider what would happen if Golovkin were to actually lose against Canelo Alvarez.
Last week we covered what might happen if Canelo lost to Golovkin. Now lets look at it the other way round.
Middleweight knock out artist Gennady Golovkin (36-0, 33 KO) is in a very unpleasant place at this point in his boxing career.
Golovkin has all of the attributes to become an absolute star in the sport of boxing including an extremely fan friendly style, a humble spirit, and major network backing him.
However there is one thing missing. A name. A BIG, signature name.
Some suggest that Golovkin should move up a division, to the even more barren landscape that is 168. Some even suggest him moving up yet again to the 175 mark to get action.
However the name that Golovkin wants is- No scratch that, the name that Golovkin needs is Canelo Alvarez. Canelo represents everything that GGG and his team so desperately desire; “Fame & Glory”.
Canelo is undoubtedly one of the most popular athletes on the planet, partly because of his bout with Floyd Mayweather and partly because of his boxing ability.
If Golovkin and Canelo ever do manage to get in the ring Canelo will easily be the best GGG has ever been in with. If GGG were to lose, consider these things.
Promoting
If GGG loses to Canelo, especially by KO, his dreams of being a star in sport are all but finished. GGG has marketed as a boogeyman (and rightfully so) for the past 3 years.
With GGG due to turn 35 years old next year it is safe to say time is not on his side. GGG and his team are hoping that a Canelo win will thrust him into the stardom they so firmly believe he deserves.
On the flipside a bad loss would do just the opposite; forever relegate him to the infinite list “Good but not great fighters. We would still be a very popular fighter, just not the fighter he and Abel so desperately hoped for.
Career Path
At this point in his career, a loss will almost certainly confine him to the middleweight division.
He may or not be able to get quality fights on a regular basis due to the fact power is something that doesn’t really change after a loss and fighters will still be hesitant to get in with him for that reason.
My thoughts are that the reluctance to fight him will be about the same from top fighters. Even after the Kell Brook performance top fighters did what they always do; make outlandish claims about fighting that they knew would never come into fruition.
Abel and his team will be forced to accept the reality that GGG never quite reached the potential they thought he would.
Matchmaking
A rematch with Canelo would be near impossible, if not clearly impossible. Even if Canelo won there is no chance he would remain unscathed.
In fact he may leave the fight not to far the from the condition of the defeated GGG. He would certainly be in no hurry to do it again.
Abel Sanchez would strongly campaign and criticize Canelo for a rematch for the next 2 years all the while GGG approaches his 38th birthday. GGG will finish his career fighting whichever brave soul manages to get in the ring with him.
Surprisingly, a few top names will try their luck with the older fighter.
If, and when Canelo Alvarez and Gennady Golovkin ever get in the ring, the results of the fight will have long-term consequences for both men. Some of the consequences will be career making, others career breaking.
