Sergey Krusher Kovalev was unanimous in his belief in all his post-fight interviews that he believed he beat Andre Ward in Las Vegas.
In what was a close fight on the night, the official judging scorecards here came out in unanimous favor of Andre Ward at the T-Mobile Arena in Vegas.
Speaking after the fight in the official post-fight press conference Sergey Krusher Kovalev said the following to the media on how he saw the scoring of the fight:
“I lost maybe 3 rounds, or 4 maximum. I knocked him down, come on. Witnesses was the hold stadium of T-Mobile Arena. Everybody saw what happened. Look at his face and my face.”
Some mentioned that the fight should not have been judged by three Americans considering the fight was between an American boxer and an overseas fighter.
However an interesting point was brought up by Promoter of Kovalev Kathy Duva on this in the post-fight press conference, as regards to this not been something that was capable of been changed as the Nevada Athletic Commission who oversaw the fight state in their rules that Nevada judges officiate their fights in Vegas.
Another interesting point was brought up after the fight I thought in that the bout was attended by mostly Andre Ward fans in the arena, and that any punches landed by Ward were cheered louder when he landed – in that this could have had a subconscious effect on the judges on the night.
Personally, I scored the fight by a round in favor of Kovalev. It was a close bout in my opinion, but thought he deserved to just edge it and get the win narrowly.
But the reality is it could have gone either way. It was one of those fights.
I enjoyed the fight overall as a spectacle to watch. It was one that had some great action in it at times and from a purist perspective, some top level boxing skills on display by both guys.
A rematch must surely happen in 2017 at some point.
While Sergey Krusher Kovalev may be feeling low after this weekend’s result, there is no doubting that he will come back stronger in 2017.
