Adonis Stevenson vs Andre Ward is something that Stevenson wants and has communicated as much straight after Andre Ward’s latest victory over Sergey’ Kruser’ Kovalev.
Many will cast a cynical eye over a potential Adonis Stevenson vs Andre Ward fight though, given the fact that the long awaited and badly wanted Adonis Stevenson vs Sergey Kovalev unification fight never actually materialized.
WBC light-heavyweight champion of the world Adonis ‘Superman’ Stevenson wants a piece of Ward however now that he’s at 175lbs and holds titles in the division – calling him out for a unification matchup straight after Ward’s controversial win against Kovalev:
Whether or not it will actually happen remains to be seen.
While the fight could definitely be in play for the new year, most likely Ward will need to face Kovalev in an immediate rematch as it is understood that the pre-fight contract has this option to be exercised for team Kovalev.
Kovalev promoter Kathy Duva said they’d be activating the clause after the fight, but it is not clear just yet if the rematch needs to take place immediately next up.
A unification fight with Stevenson could in theory take place before an immediate rematch though if both teams (Ward and Kovalev) agreed to it.
An Adonis Stevenson vs Andre Ward fight could potentially play out similar to the Kovalev fight tonight with Ward in some respects, in that it would pit a massive puncher against more of a pure boxer type.
Although Kovalev in my opinion would be the far, far more technically polished boxer than Adonis Stevenson.
It would still be an interesting fight however and unification title fights are exactly what boxing needs. On a regular basis.
In terms of the light-heavyweight division outside of Kovalev, there are probably not a whole lot of other threats out there for Ward other than Stevenson at 175lbs so a Adonis Stevenson vs Andre Ward fight could very well make sense at some point in 2017 at the latest.
